| Journey and Tawny Treasure both ended up at Cornell Veterinary Hospital, their separate injuries we treated and although Journey still has swamp cancer DVM Dotzel is very happy with how it looks, Tawny Treasure is sore but recovering as expected!
During her stay at the carnival, Summer Breeze was bullied and when cordoned off into a smaller area she was kicked hard multiple times by a pony defending food. This caused immediate life threatening injuries and although we put her on a trailer and took her to the vet she was evaluated to have virtually no chance at survival with four broken ribs and subsequent internal bleeding. We had to make the hard decision to let her go. Her foal, Pearl Harbor was able to adapt and overcome with some help from the vets and another foal friend. A lot could be said about Summer Breeze, she was one of the last non buyback ponies left on the island, a fiercely independent mare and a great mother, she had many pretty foals and we thankfully were able to keep her filly this year to contribute to the future of the herd.
All of the good news gets overshadowed by loss but the big picture is that many of these injured ponies would have met their demise if left to Mother Nature. When we can stepping in to help has shown a tremendous positive result in life longevity of ponies and their foals. None of this would be possible without the fantastic care they get from DVM Dotzel and Tipson and the vet team. |
