Pony Penning Recap Part 2
Northern Roundup
To say the weather was fantastic for this ride would be an understatement
By CHINCOTEAGUE VOLUNTEER FIRE CO.
August 2, 2026
A cool breeze and no bugs is not what was expected but everyone benefited from the great weather. Cowboys were very thorough in the far north for a mare and foal (Summer Breeze) who had been hanging out near the Md/va line. Once clear of there riders had many ponies on the marsh and all went smoothly until the notorious “Twist” and his herd decided to attempt eluding us. They gave it their best, cowboys and girls had to really work at it for a few minutes but we had a plan for twist he wasn’t expecting. We had lined trailers along the bus turnarounds eastern side so he could not go east as per his usual games. That made him go south for a little while. Riders continued and as we approached the 3/4 finished mark we were notified that only half of twists herd was in the corral. Our scout “Baby Gene” in the pickup notified cowboys that a bunch of ponies entered the thickest part of the former plover area and had yet to come out. Then began a game of cat and mouse. After about an hour we were able to find them and get them moving. We have some cool footage of all of the roundup taken by cowboys we will post at a later time. Once the cowboys cleared the plover area they continued and were able to get everything to the corral. The vet team discovered a little wound on Raven’s foal and trailered to the carnival grounds. Total roundup time 4 hours 15 minutes.
